Play Or Not

play or not:

"well, there's the question, have i had enough of this? and you know, maybe there's a limit to everything, really how far did you want to go with this, anyway."

"go on, i mean, i have an idea how serious i am..."

"the question is, am i playing or not. let's get off this. i'm gonna introduce a new word, quodity, what is that about? really, you have to ask yourself, what does it want out of me? you know, when the girl or guy starts asking personal questions, you know they're interested. you're a commodity, i don't know about what."

"meaning what? is it like, this is just a game or when i walk out the door, i'm gonna find out how serious it is?"

"that's exactly it, there's an audience there, you know it. so you're thinking, what just happened? and i mean, really, if you're willing to go all the way, you want the universal ideal, it could happen pretty fast."

"yeah!"

"i'll come back to it again. explain yourself to yourself first."

"okay, i guess. we'll go. i can't wait around."

"hi!"

"oh hi...i'm Jessica. these are my acolytes."

"where are you going?"

"i don't know yet. it's getting really uncomfortable around here. do you have any ideas?"

"what about the library?"

"the library. sure, why not? Julie, my husband tells me I should loosen up. what do you think? i agree."

Blunt Affection

"what does that mean?"

"it's not good staying off either end, you know what i mean, you have to put yourself at the front end. it's frightening at first, maybe every time actually, but that's the way it is. seem you have affection. any reaction is better than no reaction in my opinion."

"what if they say..."

"well, that's difficult. don't make them angry. if they don't agree with what you're saying, you're in trouble, i gotta admit, that's why it's like that."

"ha ha ha."

"what do you have in common? what do all people with a body have in common? you really have to think about things like this, i mean, come on."

Before It All Happens

before it all happens:

"when i was a boy, i never drank coffee, i never drank tea, now look at me, cup after cup, you know. what i thought was true forever when i was a little kid stopped when i was like fifteen."

"you became a total cynic! me, i stopped believing all that when i was thirteen, really, just a teenager to begin with. i wasn't a princess anymore, i didn't live in a castle, you know, i felt i had to grow up."

"that's what i'm saying. i'm only forty something but it's like i've had several lifetimes already, really like what it was at kid level, when i was young, that life and all its expectations totally died. it completely cut off at eighteen, a whole new life starting. i still recognize the child in me, i'm not saying it's gone completely."

"right. but it's different for me, i had hopeless really what could only be called fantasies about life. i didn't fully believe them even as a little girl. that's my problem."

"why's it like that? are you saying i'm more realistic? i'm not more realistic, i don't think. what i'm saying is, it seemed like the whole world changed, you know, the 1970s were different, the atmosphere changed to what it is now."

"yeah, but did it really change or have you changed? that's the question. or both which is probably the true answer."

"right, yeah, okay, but i don't think i've changed. maybe i was delusional as a kid and that's the change. like you say you've changed but i don't think you've really changed not all the time i've known you. you're still the same."

"but you didn't know me when i was seven or eight years old!"

"true, but how different could you be?"

"different. i drink coffee now. there are so many choices, coffee houses, coffee shops, cafés. when is tea going to be like that? it's like there are more coffee places than bars. when will there be, you know, tea houses, tea shops, tea bars maybe?"

"you know, after i've had so much coffee, it all tastes the same to me. i'm disturbed by a lot of things happening that i feel i'm unprepared for, that i couldn't see coming. it's like life is peaceful for a while and then boom!, it all happens. all at once. good things, bad things."

The Archetypal Mumbling Schizophrenic Talk

who's that? back in 1992, things were different, things were slow, like there was plenty of time, but who knows, i was only twenty. didn't know that, life would be this, hard to go back.

trying to make sense of one life, trying to deal with anyone that comes along, listening to this, listening to that, unfocused and in denial about the frighteners in life.

where am i in this question? i, you, it, what is it? said something that you like, isn't it? do i fit? sorry, what is it about? i think, what's new about that?

What I Remember Most

what i remember most:

it was a shock, for i never expected that from anyone. while even recent memory becomes stained, what you said is imprinted on my mind. there was talk, i remember that, however the one thing you said to me is what i remember most.

you were at ease then, happy to develop and discuss ideas and stories. the concept of action is always fuzzy to begin with, the way it looks is what concerns most. of course how it sounds is critical too. we don't live in a world of silence. planning for the future when so far away always seemed a haphazard process, but of course, many things are inevitable.

why is it we can only remember clearly perhaps only one statement from any conversation? is it because it was shocking? or made us happy?

patience is a virtue. timing is important. but what is remembered is that what you said came to pass, in full fruition.

how much do you mean of it? was that what you wanted me to know?

well, said and meant, only one the thing i wanted said. after all, how much could i really say at the time? you'll work it out.

for now, i am backed into a corner by decisions i made long ago as a young man, and so indeed so much for destiny. fate distracted me. what sense i can make of it?

About Person Talk

about person talk:

now talking about actions, that you do or the other person does or that you do together, is rather self-explanatory, and is, if you like, the bread and butter of a lot of conversation. in a way, it expresses the reality of time itself, an unending series of actions. but, if you will, time never "grows", past configurations of states of matter may be lost, and quite truthfully, a lot of this action is not easily remembered. do you remember exactly what you were doing, in whatever form you were, 200 years ago? probably not.

where it becomes more personal perhaps is when you express your feelings or thoughts about what you are doing, and so it becomes more revealing. learning about the other person you are talking to and revealing things about yourself, your own person, is probably the primary purpose of talking. think about it this way, from first principles, i am me, of course, but you, at the start, are an unknown quantity. we trade information about each other, our likes, our wants, our values, our outlook on life. and perhaps, if close enough in real space, even our emotions. i digress, there is a scene in the film, Closer (2004), where the female character exclaims in reply to a male character proclaiming his love for her, "where is this love ... i can't feel it". well, this could be interpreted literally, like they are actually so far apart in real space that they cannot feel each other's emotions, and that's what i first thought. can people really separated by a huge distance in real space have a real relationship? and don't other people, quite literally, "get in the way", given that there may be dozens of personal bubbles in space between them linking the two together? to return to the point, "getting to know someone" is how it starts and really is a never-ending thing. people change from day to day, though you may consider the bulk of personality to be fixed.

of course, on earth, there are, if you like, "facts" about people, though in themselves they are not truly revealing about the real person, things like their name, their job, where they live and so on. assume there are millions of people on earth with the same name, millions of people living in the same city, etc.

to truly reveal yourself is to talk about your emotions, of the eight, want, happy, love, shock, fear, anger, hate and sorrow, perhaps we mostly talk about the first two, what we like doing, what makes us happy. the fear is, of course, and no one really talks about this, is that if it goes wrong, you can make someone feel your hate of them across real space. i guess this is the real reason why people are shy, are nervous about meeting other people, there is a palpable fear of emotional incompatibility. who wants to feel something like 500 million volts of another person's hate flowing into their body? on the other hand, you may truly feel another's love for you inside.

and also, rather a lot of talk about person is about what they think, their opinions, which ultimately express their values, what they think is good, or not. as our thoughts are variable, so even our opinions may change.

there is a theory that if two people end up meeting in the same place on earth, they must have quite a lot in common to start with. obviously, they were both for earth, at the same place on earth at the same time, there must be something to talk about, even though, in actuality, they may be something like light years apart in real space. also, for those who hear voices, if they are not hearing their own thoughts, they are hearing those close in real space probably. assuming real closeness in space means similarity of personality, again there is a lot to talk about.

Talk As a Function by PART

talk as a function by PART:

it is easy not to think too much about talking all the while and yet still talk quite passably, even effectively, but at some point an understanding deep down of the purpose of conversation is useful.

as strangers to each other at first, what do we know? i am where i am, you are where you are in space. there is a fixed, unchanging distance between us, and perhaps, if we are still strangers to this day, many other people between us. who knows how many real degrees of separation are between us, how many personal bubble spaces down the line you are? as an aside, are we all linked like a chain or are there masses of personal bubble spaces stuck together in parts of space or both? now this world, this earth, is, if you like, a virtual platform where strangers can meet, even if all that is possible in actuality is a kind of speaking hologram in front of us representing another person.

PART is an acronym. P is for person. there is always a curiosity about the other person, what are they, what are they like? your job first of all is to satisfy the other person's curiosity about you. you have to reveal things about your person. what do you like? what do you value? personal details, etc.

once you get to know someone a little, when you're with them a lot, talking often moves on to A for action. what's happening? what have you done? what are you going to do? indeed what are we going to do together?

R is for relief. Ian Fleming wrote a James Bond short story, Quantum of Solace. it's about a failed marriage where they did not provide each other with a measure or "quantum of solace", that is, a certain kindness perhaps, or relief as i call it here. all the time that there is a relationship, you have to express, if you like, that you do indeed like the other person, that you wish them well, show some consideration, otherwise it's a non-starter. put it another way, simply, that you have to make them feel better, give that quantum of solace to the other person which Fleming wrote about.

finally, T for truth. everyone has questions about everything. if you can tell people truths they didn't know, all the better.

of course, this is all very simple sounding, but essentially, talk does not escape the boundaries of these things, does it?

Talk As Play Match Like and the Pitfall of Different Interest

talk as play match like and the pitfall of different interest:

to the objective observer, a successful conversation reveals that the talkers are alike in some ways, one of them reveals something about himself or herself and the other, in essence, responds that they are the same that way. what is success? obviously, where both are happy about the talk. and you can sense the truth of this theory about success from playing match like with like in personality, values and interests by thinking about what the opposite is, a disaster in conversation, namely an argument where it is apparent that both are not the same, that they have sharp differences.

where even two people have the same interest, they may have different levels of interest. one may be only slightly interested. given that you like to speak about what you're interested in, and most people are interested in themselves, an obvious example of what could go wrong is that you say too much about yourself, more than interests the other person. it would require some fascination with the other person to be a captive audience.

talk reveals what seems very real in your own world. you should be aware that these things may not figure so much in another person's world, they may not be important to them, they may not even think about them. as an example, if one remembers such and such happened when together with the other person, but the other person doesn't remember at all, it is awkward to mention it and be met with puzzled indifference.

and where talk starts going wrong, before full blown argument, when the other person is in a bad mood and suspects the worst of you, it is probably wise to say as little as possible. it's like everything you say will be used against you, that is, it will only trigger a chain of bad thoughts in the other person's mind about you. everything you say will be given a negative interpretation. or that they think you're lying.

but rather coldly viewed, to say anything to another person is always a risk, it's inherent in life. we start off knowing very little about the other person. it's actually very easy for it to go wrong in the beginning, until you have some idea of the other person, you really don't know what is safe to say, what you have in common.

subjectively, good talk seems almost to have a kind of glamour injected. mutual personal values are confirmed, essentially, we both think such and such are good things, we both want to have such and such. one validates the other.

Talk Illuminates the Mental Board

talk illuminates the mental board:

such was a time when talk was magical and wonderful, for it confirmed we were not alone. it is in essence why we talk, we don't want to be alone. to contend with the idea that you might be alone is a miserable experience. is anyone who suspects solipsism might be true happy? the concept that within the reality there is only one person. of course there might be other people but they would be in separate realities surely, not connected at all?

but given that there may be many people in this reality, each a head containing consciousness, the prospect becomes intimidating, does it not? the situation is complex. if each head were like a lollipop contained in its own zone of personal space, the space of this reality is littered with lollipops, stuck forever in place. through whatever the real process is, the lollipops can communicate with the other lollipops, and talking is the most obvious form. now presumably, the lollipops next to you are the ones most familiar to you, let's assume distance has a real effect, even though some communications may keep integrity over large distances. and probably you share values and language after so many years together. this localization makes those far away, those beyond your neighbours, perhaps hundreds of degrees of separation away in space, seem almost alien.

beyond the initial joy of not being alone and having someone to talk to, complications inevitably arise. each has its own values, what is good and what is bad, and to what degree. you might argue there are universal values and this is true, like death is bad, whatever death is, as we who are living cannot truly define death, it remains a vague original fear in the mind. of course those who live on earth now have another incarnation and death holds a modern meaning now, different from what it originally meant. i don't think the original fear is ever lost though. and so the problem becomes what to make of opposing values.

outright hostility because of it seems the threat. if i hate something and you like it, does that not mean i hate you? that is the premise of the fear associated with talk. if we assume there are a lot of people, and they act as a buffer, it perhaps just means indifference in actuality. if we can preserve at least civility with our closest neighbours, perhaps in the final judgement, disagreement with those far away does not matter much.

for talk reveals our values, it cannot not do so. generally, we speak of things we like most of all, unless we be toxic containers of hate spewing thoughts of what we don't. if we conceive of a mental board indicating that that we think is good and what is bad, the other person talking to us has a real effect. if they think something is good also, we feel they confirm our opinion, again the sense that we are not alone.

of course, there are other things apart from personal curiosity about the other person, we like to learn truths from others, and we want them to make us believe things are not as bad as we think, and of course day to day we talk about what we do. also, as it is as sound, like music, talk is an art, it may have a quality not easily defined, and is more than just the functional exchange of ideas.

Don't Miss the Basis of Talk

don't miss the basis of talk:

to each there is a personal value system, what you think are good things and what you think are bad things. of course this doesn't need much explanation. on one end of the scale of bad things is total irrevocable death, though of course, not having truly died, no one would know what this is, if even possible. hopefully not! on the other end of good things, things like immortality, magical powers, health, pleasures, avoiding physical damage, knowledge of all things and so on...

"so at the time, i just thought, i don't think i get along very well with this person, you know, and not much more. i didn't examine it. that's what came to mind, and then i dismissed it. it didn't really seem to matter. but now, i wonder, why don't people like each other? or when they do, why?"

"because when they like each other they have things in common and in the other case very little or nothing?"

"right, that's what everyone says. but that's just a little piece of the puzzle, coming from a mental angle where you're thinking, like, what do they do together? anything? that's about shared activity. but what's more fundamental, if you approach the problem towards the base, is that every one of us has in the past put a value on everything. it pops up into conscious thought now and then, but i mean, it's always there in the subconscious, and especially when we're talking to someone we've just met or don't know very well, it's completely what we're thinking about."

"so we're judging each other constantly in the beginning? so i guess that's why we're nervous sometimes."

"it's like we've each assigned a numerical value to everything, positive or negative, positive is good and negative is bad. so in the beginning, it's a case like where two wary animals are sniffing around each other, each trying to figure out the other's value system. we're trying to find agreement. and then everything else follows on from that. but that is the basis."

"i'm visualizing psychic feelers we're putting out."

"right, but it's done through talking, or at least let's look at it that way. i say something, and even if i'm not, you know, intentionally doing it, i'm implying what value that thing has for me. it's inescapable."

"so every time it goes wrong, it's because of a mismatch of personal values?"

"that's my argument. and you can see how the phrase "nothing in common" is derived from that. it's like my values determine my life vector and if someone else's values are different enough, we diverge paths and go our separate ways."

"so two strangers meet for the first time in a public place. is it fate? it's because they share some of the same values?"

"exactly. they like the same food, for example. they end up in the same aisle or the same restaurant."

"or they both read the same article in a newspaper. they're thinking the same thing. they end up in the same place."

"so it's like a game, in a sort of way, you need to find something that is the same, or a few things the same. then there is something to talk about. in a way, you lose when you reveal a harsh difference."

"but does it really matter?"

"well why do people talk? curiosity about other people. what's going on, what to do? reassurance that people are the same in some way. but they also want to know things. i mean, everyone's looking for answers, right? so if you can fulfil at least some of that, that's not half bad?"

"i guess so."

Talking Major Pitfalls

talking major pitfalls:

between strangers, or even good friends, but generally with those whom we do not know well or may be quite different from under the surface, there is always one thing to bear in mind, that is, any conversation may be, in actuality, beneath perhaps the most disarmingly polite conversation on top, a constant probing to evaluate each other's personal value systems, what they hold dear, what they want, what they do not want, and what they hate. it is often a harsh truth that those with different values cannot get along. optimists might say that people have more in common that not, but consider that even a few differing values, though seemingly trivial perhaps, may be a deal breaker in any relationship of any depth.

for those who love to talk, for the sake of talking in itself, are perhaps most likely to forget this vital fact of life. i am certain i am not the first to tell you that many relationships break up because the parties want different things. this makes it apparent that want is very important. for the talkative person, conversation is some form of art even perhaps. they may not necessarily talk that much about what they really want or need. maybe they just like the sound of their own voice! but as for the other person, they may be trying to analyse what the person wants exactly from what he or she says. you say, "such and such is..." they might interpret that as meaning literally you really want such and such, whereas that is neither the case nor the intention.

let us consider everything that brings up negative emotions such as hate, anger and fear, as things people do not want. likewise, a conversation may be a test in the same way, what they think is bad. now people do think the same way sometimes, with the same patterns. bad is, in itself, often thought to be a bad thing to talk about, so people are even less direct sometimes about it. however, as many think along the same lines, even the most indirect, subtly far removed remark from the other person could be understood as a mark of contempt. people are highly alert to what is valued as bad and an entirely innocent remark may be misinterpreted to mean that you judge such and such as a bad thing.

now talking may seem endlessly hazardous to the paranoid and the shy, even that differences too great could lead to hostility, or indifference at best, but where the parties must be connected or at the same place as fate decrees, there is at least plenty to talk about nowadays without revealing the differing personal value systems that might lead to conflict. we may not have, as optimists believe, more in common than we think, but at least we do have some things the same about which we can talk.

Talk As Pinball Minefield

talk as pinball minefield:

if conversation were as a game, like pinball, the focus of our thoughts the ball, and our words the paddle, some of the board would be minefield, for talking is not without risk. of course, it has its rewards. it satisfies personal curiosities, communicates truths, validates beliefs, makes clear what is happening and what could happen, and may bring about happiness and wellbeing.

where it goes wrong it induces hate, anger, sorrow or fear, perhaps in that very order. it is all very well to say, "oh everyone's the same", but truthfully, everyone's mind is mapped at least a little differently. everyone has a unique value system. cynically, if everyone wants different things, or even perhaps the same thing but to a different degree, what are they doing together? on the other end of the scale, into the negative, there are things people do not want, or even fear or hate. the difficulty lies in that, in a real sense, words do not mean exactly the same thing to other people, they are not connected to the same ideas, concepts and experiences as in your own mind. when i say word X, i am thinking of ideas B and M, for instance, but it may trigger someone else to think of ideas Y and F. F might be something unpleasant.

and because we are driven by want, people may assume that what we casually mention, we actually want, even if this is not true or the purpose of what we say. it is not exactly about being direct or indirect, there are different manners of speaking, some speak in an emotionally loaded way, everything closely connected to their own worldview, what they want, fear or hate or what makes them angry or sad.

to reveal acute differences in value systems would usually be thought of as a loss but then again perhaps talk is only a form of art, nice when it goes well, but not a matter of life and death. even if only some common ground is found, it is in some sense a success.

The Flow of Words and Ideas and Subtext

the flow of words and ideas and subtext:

"...it's like i was talking at cross purposes with her the whole time. maybe she thought i was judging her or something but she was misconstruing everything i said and then she was, i don't want to say attacking me back, but that's what it felt like."

"she was criticizing you, you mean?"

"not directly but how to put it, it's like she knew my weaknesses, all my faults and character flaws, and kept digging at that. i certainly didn't mean to criticize her or patronize her or whatever."

"in other words, you made some innocent remark and she took it the wrong way and then she got angry and then felt compelled to return what she thought was an insult."

"exactly. also, i think she's passive aggressive."

"but what does that really mean? instead of exploding with anger, you contain it, bottle it up inside or only release a bit of the toxic stuff at worst or become unresponsive and behave a little badly maybe? but is that so bad? a lot of people avoid confrontation and it's their natural reaction."

"i know, but part of me thinks it would be a relief if everyone just said what they thought, but yes, i see how it could get out of hand. you say things you don't mean, you being the normal, thoughtful, almost placid self."

"the question does arise, though, do people know what you think? is there some inadvertent telepathy going on? is there some channel through the collective unconscious or whatever, that streams the ideas and thoughts running through our heads? i mean, we filter out most of the bad stuff when we talk, but who's to say there is definitely, you know, completely proven, no way that there is any transmission of what we are thinking? i mean, scientists say you can't prove telepathy, but can they, by the same token, prove that there is definitely zero thought transfer going on?"

"so what you are saying is, i was really actually thinking bad thoughts about her, but even though i didn't say anything of that, she picked up on it? so i'm actually a bad person anyway?"

"no, i'm not saying that. were you thinking bad thoughts about her?"

"no! not until she started attacking me!"

"what you were saying about saying things you don't mean, what you really think and feel and believe being contradicted by what you say in anger, i look back and i see where i've made mistakes, you know? like why did i ever believe that? so it's a work in progress. but, i mean, i'm here, you're where you are, eternally, it's like why should we ever deal in anything so negative, you know? i'm just glad that we can communicate, we can talk."

The Inevitable Abrasive Nature of the Web of Words

the inevitable abrasive nature of the web of words:

we may think of words as something insubstantial, perhaps just images in a book, text on a screen, sounds in our heads, but consider that they might be something more tangible, an essential part of the machinery of life and the universe. any procedure or social process in life on earth requires words, words make things work.

posit that words and their languages and meanings occupy their own dimension in space, that they are something as real and varied and substantial as the material of light or sound. they are an instrument of life. all words and their meanings form a web in space, all connected to each other. the ways they are linked and the conceptual distances between different words and their meanings are something we all know intuitively. and just by thinking and using words we shape and change this web all the time.

it is unfortunate that there are bad words, just as it is unfortunate that bad things happen. again it is unfortunate that we can carelessly trigger bad thoughts in others when talking. some words or phrases inevitably conjure up negative ideas, others, though neutral in themselves, may naturally lead to bad thoughts anyway, as they are only a short distance away. when they lead to bad thoughts about the person itself, calling into question its own beliefs about self, or play on its own worst fears, such that they might be true, the sometimes abrasive nature of words and language reveals itself. we are all party to fear and pride, such is the nature of the human being.

i fear this abrasive nature of words and talk is inevitable. often it is difficult to console anyone that frightened, or to validate anyone that proud. the perfect idealized conversation requires conditions of security and jolliness and mutual interest that cannot always be met. perhaps as the other person, you can only provide at best a sense that someone is not alone, that there is the other person who cares.

Conversation and the Information Exchange

conversation and the information exchange:

social animals that we all are, we long to talk, to learn about others, and to give voice to thoughts about our lives.

what is happening? what is going to happen? what has happened? dealing with the matter before us is often our most essential part of everyday conversation, a discussion unavoidable while we are together, for there is a need to arrive at a mutual understanding of events.

to find agreement, to share details of our lives, our personality, to help each other, to give insights into matters in which we are expert, to feel what others feel, all are the life blood of talk. it is a natural curiosity about the other person which must be satisfied. be it we are impressionable creatures, for we feel the glamour of others and their most noticeable differences, in voice and actions.

we build on what we have in common, a kind word is remembered, disagreements may pass, and a real connection is made.

Theme in Conversation

theme in conversation:

a place, a mood, the ambient noise....
however we arrived, whatever we did, through which doors, together in congress now.
observations, both personal and of the situation, contemplation, regard to dress, manner and circumstance.

talk....
someone has started, someone is listening.

what is there to talk about?

this is what i think....
do you differ? because now i have heard that from you.

anyway i continue, though i consider what you have said.
i shoot, i relay, i put forth, until my strength fails and falls on uncertain ground and my thoughts become clouded and confused.
