A Frame of Love

a frame of love:

it was morning. she was somewhere safe. the previous twenty four hours had been a struggle. what was happening now was erasing memories of the far past when they had been together.

it was another life now or certainly seemed it and the new replaces the old. he had violated the past with his activity but there was something between the two still intact.

to recount to her, to tell her of his life after many years was a move back to long ago.

a drink, chatter surrounding him, then something dropped. like the various symbols on the wheels on the slot machine coming to rest, a chain of miserable thoughts came in a shot - her, doubt, pain. the two worlds had collided.

another day, similar circumstances, but he had recovered.

Long Summers Ago

long summers ago:

a wry comment and laughter marked the entrance of one of those long summer days of the past with time spent both indoors and out in the garden and playing fields. what was in memory could not be taken for canon truth. was it one summer or another, one day or another?

the laws of manners dictated extensive conversation. yes, truly, shoot! have a ball. engage one another. the lord of our party kept a watchful eye over us. ain't too much? is he looking? we were aware of each other and wary of ourselves. indeed, what was fitting and proper, in this the last few days together? soon to be shipped away from this patch, this land.

The Promise of Ancient Alliances

the promise of ancient alliances:

as it was, there was no modern society with its customs and practices, its rote forms of behaviour. as it is today, people take many things in common for granted, the language, dress and general culture, no longer do we need to search intensively to find what to say or how to behave in most situations.

still, then it was a divided world....
divided by differences of geography and personal differences, and they were in fairly isolated groups. alliances between groups of a few became alliances between many, and anything of value was quickly distributed and shared. the leaders of the time gave promises that they would help and continue together as part of a larger group.

the difficulty of these early meetings was the struggle in communication and the often startling differences between people.

The Mystic Legacy of the Ancients

the mystic legacy of the ancients:

several things from the ancient past are not lost. their view of life, as it was, may have been simple but surely they could imagine today, at least in part, though perhaps they could not quite place the details of the present. people dreamed of cities with their tall buildings and quick means of transport to distant places long ago, before they existed. with little to do, what else could they do but imagine the far future? they constructed language and forms which reside with us now. sometimes it is hard to distinguish what is truly modern and what is ancient in culture.

it is a primal urge to imagine the possibilities of the future. even today, people imagine starships and travel to other worlds. as of yet, they do not exist. hyperdrive and fuel have not been invented.

sometimes, echoes of the past arrive, to inform us of ancient objectives and agenda. it is human instinct to search for knowledge and this was emphasized in the ancient past.

The Chaos of Ancient Times

the chaos of ancient times:

in truly ancient times, before the age of science, most had not met and were indeed worlds apart. it was a time of isolation and instability, a time of self discovery in the chaos that was creation. geography was unknown, language undiscovered and there was no common system in place.

now ideas require words to express them. the subsequent development of language and obsession with making sense of the world around them were key. the sound of language was inspiring and its spread rapid across what was then the world as it was.

language became cultural movements. indeed, when we speak of conquest, this could be interpreted as a conquest of ideas and culture, a common base of tools to communicate with each other.

life was uncertain. those of great power and influence were thought of as magicians or even gods. in understanding the ancients, you must realize that they began with very little but hope. the quest for immortality and knowledge and wisdom were common themes in ancient history. to say that it was an insecure time is to say that they were fearful, yet they were wonderfully prepared to learn. they grasped at anything that would lead to greater understanding and created ideals for themselves.

however, the nature and personalities of people often do not change with time, by which i mean that these types are still with us today, though in an altogether modern setting.

as we all know, time as recorded is measured in seconds, minutes, hours and so on. we assume there was a start to everything, useful as a reference point.

the following is an illustrative construct:

let us imagine a board of coloured squares, ten by ten, to be seen....

now at the start, the original states of those squares seem random as compared to each other. there are numerous colours, perhaps some squares are the same colour but different shades, perhaps some squares are identical to other squares. as time progresses, some of those squares change, though perhaps not all squares change. some squares change a great deal. some squares change very little. some squares change and then back to original state, perhaps in an infinite time loop. some squares may change a great deal but eventually are reset to original state.

do squares affect adjoining squares?
if so, how much?

Timelines and Distant Courses in History

timelines and distant courses in history:

from what is presented in historical accounts, the inevitable sense that diverse cultures and societies traded certain values over the course of time is held up as a mark of achievement.

ancient cultures were occupied by constructing language as a means of communication, to unite their groups in the way they thought and spoke. this always was a barrier to any kind of social harmony.

the study of labour is a branch of history and the industrialization associated with it. alternatively, leisure activities benefited greatly from the fruits of labour and hard work. people may be divided by what they think but at least they were united in terms of activity.

hard to imagine some particular course in history that developed in isolation may be the case though some individuals may, even though they were more affected, be also clueless. these events may be important as they would explain why the present is as it is.

Focus in History

focus in history:

examining history and its records often surprises us, first the different emphasis in life in the past. from the words used we imagine an altogether alternative world and we become familiar with what those in the past thought about, the large movements, invention and then social concerns.

there are greater themes in history, what obsessed people, be it machines and tools, clothes, or even social progress in the sense that different groups engaged for the first time. to study the greater theme should not exclude consideration of all others, though perhaps what really happened was that life was a circus around the major activity of the time.

there is in people a tendency to be caught up with group interest such that times in the past seem biased and unbalanced now.

as stated in a previous blog (Power and Person) history and religion are obsessed with the study of the large and powerful. the rise of the large corporation and big business deserves some thought. in modern life, we are surrounded by product from big business, the cars, the foodstuffs, clothes and electronics.

the late 1800's saw the discovery of crude oil and Rockefeller's Standard Oil came to prominence, also the invention of Coca-Cola, for example. people saw in modest beginnings the start of something potentially great and joined in to support these businesses.

developments in science and technology gave rise to wonderful new machines leading to an increase in wealth and living standards. there were periods in history where there was an intense rivalry between factions such that progress was severely halted. after all, business is competitive and ideas scarce.

these large corporate entities impacted on the world to change things forever.

Money Creation and Destruction

money creation and destruction:

the initial creation of money is of course by government, which then flows through the economy, passing through many hands, and the government, through central banks, remains the ultimate creator of money. credit systems later evolve through private banks and their lending and the distinction may not be clear.

the increase in credit in economic systems and the decline of cash involvement and the rise in debt and risk in business deals, and the subsequent failures and bankruptcies thereof, results in loss of capital and what amounts to destruction of money and credit as failed economic projects must be written off. even cash sums involved may in effect be lost from the system as cash is hoarded in the event of risk.

successful business ventures create capital and only increase the flow of money and credit in the economy.

in recession, if we assume a decrease in the money supply, and the resulting deflationary consequences, can the government remedy the economic situation by creating money?

without money, the economy stalls.

in any developed town, it is important to remember that the supermarket is where everyone has been. if X starts talking off about the school her children go to and Y says she sends her sons to another, you can conclude this is a town where there are young children and community life is centred around families. commuter towns have sprung up and distance to the railway station or bus station is the measure of any property.

transport is far more complex to analyze. is it the car, the bicycle, the tram or the bus or train? or even the plane or starship or boat or ship? fuel is a consideration.
housing is the industry which shows most the inequalities in society. the lord or lady of the manor versus the council house tenant or those living in the projects.

other people are looking at us. the field around us is charged.
we become impulsive, we move on.

worlds apart, connections made

Verbal Reasoning

verbal reasoning:

is an attempt to further the truth already known.
it references that already known by adding a new series of words.
it could also be thought of as a search for new context.

example:

i already have a circle of friends. if i make more friends, how....
....would my new friends relate to my old friends?
....would my new friends make more friends i don't know?
....who would my new best friend be?
....how would i introduce my old friends to my new friends?
....would they get along?
....would i still be a good friend to my old friends?
....do i have many friends?

Mathematics: Algebraic Complexity Examples

Algebraic Complexity Examples:

Example a
2x+3+0=6
2x=3
x=3/2

Example b
2x+3+1=6
2x=2
x=1

Example c
2x+3+2=6
2x=1
x=1/2

Series a,b,c: x=3/2,x=1,x=1/2
What is the next number in this series?

2x+3+3=6
2x=0
x=0

the next number is 0

More examples:
2x+3=(1/2)+5
2x+3=11/2
2(2x+3)=11
4x+6=11
4x=5
x=5/4

2x+3=1+5
2x+3=6
2x=3
x=3/2

Financial Economics: Expected Returns

expected returns:

any project of economic interest requires capital, the timescales for expected returns are certainly important, not only is it a matter of satisfying initial credit claims but also determining the level of interest in the project. if i and my partners have to wait 14 years for the full level of expected returns, would we still be interested? what if it were only 4?

the larger the project, the more complex it becomes, in terms of asset classes formed and used and traded. financing or capital expenditure is key from the outset, not only to set up the venture but also to maintain the corporation. where does this capital come from? the credit/capital markets or from the forming partners. capital may be very expensive.

running costs may vary and can lead any company to bankruptcy. returns in the later years must be greater than costs.

R = Returns
C = Costs

R > C

The Analyst

the analyst:

his or her job:
to collect from most known sources of information, rearrange variables, find causal evidence, search possibilities and outcomes....

....and offer most likely predictions of the future.

how does X lead to Y? how many likely outcomes are there? do things come about by random chance?

if A does not happen, what then are the chances B or C will?

the analyst has a job to forecast the future and provide solutions in each instance.

Think!

think!:

we need answers....

idea
concept
theory
thought
solution

raised consciousness of the truth....

....crystallizes in the head, so to speak, and is difficult to shake. it affects our mood, our emotions, our subconscious mind and ultimately our actions or indeed in some cases our nonactions or omissions. the truth is hard to forget, especially when gained through dreadful experiences: damaged, carrying baggage. our emotions are a powerful source or influence.

....i can't stop thinking about something. am i missing something?

What to Say?

what to say?

a look, a comment
where are we going with this and what do you think?

what do people mean by THIS WORD that everyone uses?
it is all about context.
is it?

in life, as in all things, individuals isolate themselves....
circumstances, choices, change
a need for the familiar
the time, the attention

what is going on?

Neutral Stance

neutral stance:

what am i? where am i going?
the situation develops....

what do i know of the future? will i ever return?
the past casts a mood. i remember events long gone, people i met before.
i will not linger, i will not pause.

may the situation carry me, may the gloom recede, brightness envelop me....
place to place
flowing with the current

How Did We First Meet?

how did we first meet?

of communication, what we hear comes high on the list:
what did she say? what did you two talk about?
what do you think of what he said? what was that expression she used?

fixing geographical location:
let's meet! where is she? where is he?
theoretically: the time is right, we are both here. where?

think! what was the last thing i was told?
