A Historical Perspective on Social Hierarchy

a historical perspective on social hierarchy:

there is in man an innate sense of social hierarchy. there are leaders and their followers. it is almost a common obsession, and this is reflected in history.

from medieval history, with its princely states and duchies, lords of various calibre and the notion of the free man. hope that the leader is wise and able, to submit power to the few in command.

wealth and power are associated with these concepts. a more modern view of such a man might be the millionaire playboy businessman, leader of a large company employing many people and with his bright red sports car and jet, indeed free to come and go as he pleases.

attached to rank are presumed qualifications of social ease and attention to those around and of course natural intelligence.
